Theme Park May Open In Two Years

John Binkowski, Orlando-based theme park producer would like to put together a group of financial backers to lure a major theme park to the Fantasy Harbour area requiring Horry County to rezone 150 acres.

Binkowski thinks Myrtle Beach is now where Orlando was 15 or 20 years ago, and currently draws more visitors than Pigeon Forge, the home of Dollywood. He has wanted to locate a theme park at Fantasy Harbour for more than two years.

Binkowski owns The Ice Castle Theatre and the Cercle Theater in Fantasy Harbour. Binkowski's company, Renaissance Entertainment, produces three-dimensional films, stunt shows and other entertainment for clients such as Disney and Anheuser-Busch. Binkowski worked for Sea World for 13 years before retiring as vice president of entertainment.

For many years, rumors of a major (or minor) theme park circulated in this area. While many agree that Fantasy Harbour would be and excellent site for a theme park, no one yet knows what impact it would have on the surrounding hotels, theaters and Waccamaw Factory Shoppes. AGI, the global insurance company who owns the mall has lost a number of tenants, but they have not announced any changes in the property.

Horry County Zoning Administrator Roland Meyer said the Planning Commission could endorse the rezoning proposal Aug. 6 if Binkowski's plan meets county zoning guidelines.
