September
Activities
Myrtle
Beach is often seen as “beach cultured”, a place for
sand, sun, and little else. However, September brings events that
will change this perception. Myrtle Beach will host a handful of
festivals this month, including the SOS Fall Migration, the Pawley’s
Island Festival of Music and Art, and the Atalaya Arts and Crafts
Festival. These festivals add a little artistic flare to our beach
town.
The SOS Fall Migration is an annual shag dance festival that will
be held this year from September 12-21. Shaggers from several states
will be traveling to Myrtle Beach to take part in this festival,
which honors the beach and shag music culture. Over 12,000 people
attended the event last year, which included dance workshops, live
entertainment, and shag contests. This year’s event will be
held in many places along the Grand Strand, see http://www.shagdance.com
for further information on SOS and the Fall Migration.
The Pawley’s Island Festival of Music and Art is a month-long
festival featuring music and dance acts from all over the country,
including the Richmond Ballet and Nashville Bluegrass Band. This
festival began as a celebration of African-American sacred music,
but now caters to all tastes with art exhibits, dance recitals,
and various musical performances. Their homepage can be found at
http://www.pawleysislandfestivalofmusic.org
.
Visitors to the Grand Strand enjoy Atalaya, the unique home once
owned by Anna Huntington, year round. However, once a year they
are also treated to the Atalaya Arts & Crafts Festival. This
year’s festival will be held September 26-28. Eclectic blends
of arts and crafts vendors from all over the world attend the festival
each year to sell and compare their crafts. A juried art show will
also be included in the activities.
As you can see, there are plenty of things to keep anyone’s
September calendar full! Take some time to check these things out!
