Where The Seniors Are

Like kids heading south for Spring Break, the Seniors do it for the cold northern winter. Florida cities, once a winter haven for retired northerners, may have been replaced by Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Myrtle Beach, AKA The Grand Strand, was known for decades as a wonderful resort destination for summer vacationers. In the early eighties, winter visitors on their way to Florida discovered it and loved its "off-season". They learned of its economically priced restaurants, inexpensive golf, outlet shopping, reasonable accommodations and moderate weather - all winter long. They liked being able to drive to Myrtle Beach in half the time and have the opportunity for relatives to visit them as well. At some point in the nineties, The Grand Strand had established itself as the east coast’s winter headquarters for seniors.

Hotels and resorts court these snowbirds eager to fill empty rooms and condos from November to April. Resort Vacation Services, rental agent for condominiums at The Myrtle Beach Resort, have adopted a winter pricing plan they call "the longer you stay, the less you pay". This discount program provides for a savings of up to 15% for seniors wishing to winter in mild weather on the Atlantic Ocean. Also, first-time senior visitors are eligible for an additional $100.00 off.

The Myrtle Beach Resort has long been a haven for northerners and midwesterners looking to escape snow and ice, and now it has begun to attract "snowbirds" from as far as way as Montana and Alberta, Canada.

The rising popularity of the Resort has to do primarily with two factors. The Myrtle Beach Resort offers just what seniors are looking for...spacious one and two bedroom condominiums with ocean views and reasonable rent. With hundreds of seniors wintering there, activities are plentiful. And now, seniors can stay for up to six months at greatly reduced rates. It's true - the longer you stay, the less you pay!
