| I recently completed an informal survey of the Myrtle Beach Living
staff. Although it was hard for us to limit our choices to only
one or two favorites, I was able to compile a variety of selections
for this month's column.
The restaurants below are listed in no particular order.
Pawleys Island Tavern
Here is the home of shrimp, beer, and blues. This is not a place
where you go to eat, this is a place where you go to visit. The
Tavern is a local social hub, and the eclectic mix of friendly
island personalities is what really gives the place its unique
flavor. Newcomers are welcomed to the fold with open arms, and
the return of familiar faces is looked forward to each summer.
There are so many tourists that come back to the PIT year after
year that they are referred to as "summer regulars".
Lunch and dinner are laid-back, low key family atmospheres. Weekend
nights are an experience you'll never forget. They have great
food (lowcountry cuisine, brick-oven pizza, blue-plate lunch specials,
sandwiches, salads, and "bar food"), fabulous Americana
music (live blues, bluegrass, jam bands, funk, and jazz) four
nights a week(Thursday through Sunday), and an upscale bar selection
that any discriminate alcohol drinker will appreciate. The physical
atmosphere also contributes to the laid back feeling. Tucked behind
the Island Shops, the PIT is a secluded, rustically renovated
old building covered in lowcountry murals and all manners of accumulated
"souvenirs". The whole place runs on "island time",
and you will be, too, before you leave.
Flo's
The food at Floes is always succulent and is a welcome
departure from the Grand Strands standard seafood offerings.
Appetizers include Crab Cakes, Alligator Fritters, Cajun Oysters,
and Fish Chowder. Flos most famous offering, Cajun fried
pickles, is the most popular appetizer on this day, and the servers
bring them out in droves.
K
and W Cafeteria
A Myrtle Beach staple, this cafeteria-style restaurant cant
be beat for value breakfast, lunch, or dinner. For lunch
and dinner youll be able to choose from a large array of
salads, entrees, vegetables, desserts, breads, and non-alcoholic
beverages. Take the entire family and dine for less, per person,
than $3 at breakfast, $5 at lunch and $7-8 for dinner. Southerners
love their traditional style of cooking and so will you.
River City Cafe
Peanut shells on the floors and a diverse assortment of collectibles
on the walls, make this fun-loving, rustic cafe an old favorite
with locals. USA Today called the River City Cafe one of the best
places in the nation to take the kids", and it was also voted
"Best of the Beach". They serve the best burgers on
the beach, homemade french fries and hand-dipped onion rings,
plus the freshest salads, sandwiches and more!
T-Bones Steakhouse and Saloon
Not to be confused with the chain restaurant T-Bonz near Broadway
at the Beach. T-Bones has been serving the best ribs on the Grand
Strand for years. The ribs at T-Bones fall off the bone and melt
before you can even wash them down with the near freezing long
necks. Their house special served with a baked potato, and caesar
salad is all youll need
and its quite affordable.
Want to try something other than ribs? T-Bones offers a variety
of steaks including Filet, New York Strip, Rib eye, and of course,
T-Bones. They also serve the Big Texan 24 ounces
of piping hot red meat served with Texas Chili, potato, salad
and rolls.
Bovines
Critics (and locals alike) consider Bovines to be one
of the best restaurants along the Grand Strand. Bovines
is also one of the most beautiful waterfront restaurants on the
coast. When asked, where to dine in Murrells Inlet, Bovines
is most likely the answer youll get. It will give you a
chance to see the progress this little fishing community has made
in its quest to win back the title of the seafood
capital of the south. Bovine's features fresh local seafood,
aged beef cooked over mesquite and charcoal, gourmet pizzas from
a wood fired brick oven, and eclectic chef specialties. Bovine's
has also won many local and regional awards for outstanding cuisine.
Southside Grill
Mimi and Rick McKee who moved here from Pittsburgh opened Southside
Grill several years ago. It is a "hole in the wall"
found in a strip shopping center, on your left, south of the Myrtle
Beach Resort and almost directly across the street from the Surfside
Post Office. It was a true "locals favorite" before
all our visitors came along and adopted it as their own! The prices
are reasonable and the food is always good - lunch or dinner.
The reason the desserts are so delicious is that Mimi makes them
herself from scratch.
The Library
Known locally as a special occasion restaurant this
downtown establishment is the most formal and classic restaurant
along the Grand Strand, an area that is not known for its classy
restaurants. Evoking a library, the walls are lined with old and
new volumes. The tables have crisp white linen, and the food service
is the best. Serving dinner only, the Library is not innovative
in its selection of seafood, duck, beef, chicken, and veal dishes,
but only first-class ingredients are used; and you won't get better
attention anywhere!
Omega Pancake House
This is a long time favorite for locals and visitors alike who
enjoy a fast, reasonably priced, high quality breakfast. High
quality you say? Arent all breakfasts just about the same?
Well try the Omega and youll discover there is a difference
be
it fresher eggs, lighter pancakes, or tastier grits, we dont
know. While you are there, say hello to Harry, the congenial owner
wholl be wondering around the dining area (unless theyre
short-handed and then hell be cooking your food. They serve
lunch as well
mostly pancakes!
Seafare Seafood Restaurant
If you like seafood buffets, this is probably as good as any
(and better than most). Its fairly priced in the low 20s
(get a coupon and save $2 per person) and includes stuffed lobster
tails, crab legs, oysters Rockefeller, crab imperial, sliced prime
rib, a variety of fried, baked and broiled fish, and much more
including a dessert and salad bar. They have a live mermaid swimming
around an indoor pond that kids (and dads!) will get a kick out
of.
Pacino's
A nice little Italian place where you can get a good bowl of
spaghetti, lasagna, ravioli, or whatever the chef/owner may have
prepared for that evenings house special. A small Italian
Deli accompanies it where you can pick up an assortment of sandwich
meats, breads and wines to take home. The prices are reasonable,
the decor appealing and the service very personal
ask for
Debbie, our favorite waitress.
Ultimate California Pizza
Voted Best of the Beach year after year, this popular
pizza spot with several locations delivers or you may eat in.
Their secret is over 50 gourmet toppings and homemade, hand-tossed
dough. They have an unbelievable variety of specialty pizzas including
Filet Mignon and Thai Chicken plus superb subs, salads,
new foraccia sandwiches, wings and more.
Gulf
Stream Cafe
View the ocean on one side and Murrells Inlet on the other. We
often visit this delightful restaurant early to take advantage
of their "early evening menu" served 4-5:30 PM.
Carolina
Roadhouse
This restaurant is popular with locals and tourists alike. Be
sure to phone ahead before you leave your hotel or home to ensure
quicker seating when you arrive. We enjoy treating our guests
at this restaurant which can be counted on for excellent food
and service.
Sea
Captain's House
You can't beat the oceanfront dining at the Sea Captain's House,
one of the most popular restaurants in Myrtle Beach! This restaurant
has been in business for 40+ years and has won many dining awards.
Toffino's
This local favorite is tucked away in the Old Air Force Base
on Farrow Parkway. It is open 8-6 Mon.- Fri. and 8-4 on Saturday.
Order a delicious deli sandwich, and pick up something from the
bakery (finalist in "Best of the Beach") before you
leave.
