In the past fifteen years, his paintings have won numerous national awards, including the Colorado Art Association Award, the Grumbacher Gold and Silver Medals, the Winsor Newton Award, the San Diego Watercolor Society Award, the Georgia Watercolor Society Bronze Medal, the Louisiana Watercolor Society Medal of Excellence, and the Emily Lowe Memorial Award from the American Watercolor Society. He has had paintings accepted in most major exhibitions, including Watercolor USA, Watercolor West, American Watercolor Society, and the Butler Institute of American Art.

Steven is an elected member of the Rocky Mountain Watermedia Society, Watercolor West, Pastel Society of America, and in 1988 became the first South Carolina native elected to the American Watercolor Society.

The readers of two local publications selected Steven as the best area artist and his gallery was voted best area art gallery.

His paintings can be seen in Splash 3, Splash 4, Best of Portrait Painting, and Creative Watercolor, which are all nationally published art books that showcase the best watercolors in the nation.

Steven is frequently asked to judge art competitions, speak to art organizations, and teach workshops, which he does several times a year.
