A hurricane is a severe tropical storm that forms in the southern
Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico or in the
eastern Pacific Ocean. Hurricanes need warm tropical oceans,
moisture and light winds above them. If the right conditions
last long enough, a hurricane can produce violent winds,
incredible waves, torrential rains and floods.
Many people talk about hurricanes during the fall however
the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November
30, with the peak season being after August and ending
in October. A severe hurricane striking our coast is a
rarity. Myrtle Beach is situated on the eastern shoreline
beneath North Carolina and to our advantage most of the
truly severe storms pass us by. This does not mean that
we are never hit hard by a hurricane and we should always
be prepared to evacuate when there may be even a chance
of danger.
Some area Resorts include a guarantee for
guests who have been evacuated due to hurricanes. For
