Try to Reduce Congestion

The Harley-Davidson Myrtle Beach Bike Week and Atlantic Beach Bike Festival, two of the biggest tourist events to take place each year in Myrtle Beach, are receiving some much needed plans to alleviate traffic for this year. Motorcycle festival groups such as the Bike Week Task Force aim to reduce congestion along Ocean Boulevard this year by spreading biker events from Murrells Inlet to Little River. Typically, the visiting bikers concentrate on the area along Ocean Boulevard from North Myrtle Beach to the Murrells Inlet area. By extending the area over which events take place, event planners hope to lighten the load of Highway 17, which sees heavy traffic during these busy times.

In addition to the expanded geographical area, Myrtle Beach Police will be hiring more officers to patrol during these times. A traffic safety team is also in place to reduce the number of fatal accidents. Sadly, 2003 was a record year in the number of bike accident fatalities.

This year's Harley Davidson-Myrtle Beach Bike Week is scheduled for May 7-16, and Atlantic Beach Bikefest is May 27-31. Over 300,000 visitors are expected for the Harley-Davidson event, and 100,000 are expected at the Atlantic Beach Bikefest.
